Moving house can be very expensive and without advanced planning or know-how, you could end up paying more than you need to. This is especially difficult as moving home can be one of the most expensive and stressful experience one can go through.
We want to help and below is some advice on ways to save money, reduce stress and save time.
Declutter: The more you have to move, the higher the cost of the removal. So, by having a thorough clear out, you’ll have less to move so you can reduce the amount of money a removals company will charge. Most removal companies estimate based on the size of the house but will also take into consideration the number of boxes and belongings.
And as an added incentive, any unwanted items can be given away (check out Freecycle.com), given to charity or sold on give you a little extra towards the cost of your move.
Avoid peak times: Prices at peak moving times will be higher due to the demand for moving-related services. Generally, the most popular moving times during a week will be weekends or during school holidays (especially summer). If you can organise your home move outside of these times, you will likely be able to find better deals.
Be mindful that whilst these may be the best times for lower prices, there are many factors that determine property completion timings such as other people in the chain, the availability of the respective professionals (solicitors, mortgage providers and estate agents)
Compare quotes: In order to get the best price and match your needs, it is advisable to get at least 2 -3 different quotes for the services which are necessary for your move – such as surveyors, solicitors and removals companies. Make sure to choose a reputable company and ensure you compare not just the prices but also what is included in the price. For example, some companies include dismantling and reassembly of some furniture. This is especially useful if moving with children and you want an item such as a bed to be ready straight away on the day of moving in.
Use a moving checklist: Stay organised and prepare for your move efficiently with a checklist. Not only can this keep you on track and reduce stress, it can help you avoid premium prices and wasted time as a result of last-minute panics and forgotten tasks.
Self packing: Many removal companies offer a professional packing service. These services provide expert and efficient packing for anyone that may not have the time or inclination to do it themselves. However, if you have enough time and /or are on a budget, you can do this yourself and save some money.
Enlisting the help of friends and family will help speed up what can often be a lengthy task. What’s more, so long as you check they are structurally sound, you can often pick up boxes for free at supermarkets instead of buying them. Alternatively, many removals companies will rent you boxes, often paid for in advance and then refunded when the boxes are returned.
